The four travelers walked up to the great gate of Emerald City and rang the bell.四人の旅人はエメラルドの都の大きな門の前まで歩いていき、呼び鈴を鳴らした。
After ringing several times, it was opened by the same Guardian of the Gates they had met before.何度か鳴らしたあとで、ようやく門が開いた。開けてくれたのは、前にも会ったあの門番だった。
“What! are you back again?” he asked, in surprise.「おや！ また戻ってきたのかい？」門番はびっくりしてたずねた。
“Do you not see us?” answered the Scarecrow.「見ればわかるだろう？」とかかしは答えた。
“But I thought you had gone to visit the Wicked Witch of the West.”「だが、おまえたちは西の悪い魔女をたずねていったものとばかり思っていたぞ」
“We did visit her,” said the Scarecrow.「ええ、ちゃんとたずねてきましたとも」と、かかしは答えた。
“And she let you go again?” asked the man, in wonder.「それで、あの魔女がおまえさんたちを帰してくれたというのかい?」と、門番の男は目を丸くしてたずねた。
“She could not help it, for she is melted,” explained the Scarecrow.「止めたくても止められなかったのさ。だって、あの魔女はとけてしまったんだもの」と、かかしが説明した。
“Melted!「とけた、ですって！
Well, that is good news, indeed,” said the man.いや、それはまったく、うれしい知らせですな」と、男は言った。
